How It Works

Vehicle telematics applications continue to grow rapidly worldwide as fleet operators see the measurable and continuing benefits of installing GPS/GSM Tracking Solutions on their fleets.

The most common vehicle telematics application is probably GPS/GSM enabled Automated Vehicle Tracking Systems (aka, VTS, Fleet Tracking Systems, Mobile Asset Management etc.). Automated Vehicle Tracking Systems are platforms which can be harnessed to deliver much more than real time location information for fleet vehicles. Important safety features can now be incorporated into the tracking system, such as Crash Alerts, Crash Severity Indicators, Airbag Deployment Warnings, Operator Injury Advisements and Crash Data Files among others. Crashboxx™ was developed to offer these features as a peripheral device, complementing the tracking functions of the VTS, to which it connects directly and relies upon, for real time communication with the Fleet Manager.

The CrashboxxTM module is in effect an Event Data Recorder (EDR), a special purpose computer with sensors and the necessary specialized software to operate the system. The CrashboxxTM module is located in a suitable position on the vehicle and is connected by wire to the GPS/GSM tracking system. CrashboxxTM harnesses the GPS/GSM capability on the Vehicle Tracking System eliminating feature overlap.

The sensor measures the vehicle’s acceleration and deceleration behavior, and when an "event" occurs, the signal is processed by the software. A report of the event is immediately created, and sent to the Vehicle Tracking System. The VTS in turn, transmits the report to the end user in the form of a report or alert.

CrashboxxTM allows makers of Automated Vehicle Tracking Systems to add new, valued added safety and crash related features to their Fleet Manager clients. For fleet operators, the value of knowing what happened in a crash can be worth much more than the cost of a vehicle. Consider that a property only damage crash can cost a fleet operator just tens of thousands of dollars, but an injury accident can routinely cost hundreds of thousands and a fatal accident can cost millions of dollars1.

Vehicle Tracking and Locating System developers can use CrashboxxTM to leverage their existing vehicle tracking platforms to deliver crash related features and functions, without investing added capital in research and development. Deliver truly value added information to fleet operators, achieve greater revenue possibilities and stand out in an increasingly crowded field.

CrashboxxTM is an Event Data Recorder, specially designed to complement and enhance the functionality of Vehicle Tracking Systems (VTS). Addressing the vehicle fleet blackbox market, CrashboxxTM was developed with the needs of VTS makers and Fleet Managers in mind, offering improved safety, ability to lend help to drivers in need of assistance, easier compliance with Duty of Care obligations, objective crash/event records and potentially, lower insurance and litigation costs.

Why Install CrashboxxTM on my Fleet Vehicles?

1) Control Accident Costs
Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVAs) are the leading cause of occupational death and injury in the US and have been so for years. In 2003, MVA’s accounted for 25% of all workplace fatalities, more than one and a half times greater than the next leading cause of death, (contacts with objects and equipment). The impact to employers of MVAs can be far reaching, including significant medical, legal and financial costs. Managing the outcome of an MVA that resulted in the death or injury to an employee, imposes stress and burden on any employer. Without an object record of what happened, the process becomes more protracted and potentially more expensive than it need be. Automatic crash recording and analysis using Crashboxx™ provides the fleet operator with an unbiased objective record of what happened during the crash. Measuring crashes allows fleet managers to manage the outcome better.

2) Reduce Risk
As a fleet operator, whether self insured, or partially self insured, MVA’s usually result in claims against you. Bogus claims, exaggerated injuries are just a few of the threats to an employer that often arise from an MVA. It is essential that the fleet operator have a record of the crash event which can be used to challenge and defend against inflated or other fraudulent claims against the company.

3) Competitive Advantage
Fleet operators worldwide are faced with rapidly rising costs to operate and maintain their vehicles. Companies are constantly striving for new approaches to achieve an advantage over the competition. An event data recorder from Crashboxx™, delivering real time data via your Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), can be a vital tool to achieve sustainable competitive advantage over other companies without this advanced equipment.

4) Leverage Your Investment in Vehicle Tracking Systems
If you have installed a VTS on your fleet, you are already aware of the benefits of the right information, in real time delivered to your desktop. Crashboxx™ is unique in that it is designed to function with your VTS, and uses this existing platform to deliver even more useful information to you.

5) Expert Engineering
CrashboxxTM was developed and engineered by experts who really understand vehicle crashes. Our team of experienced safety engineers have worked for some of the world’s leading car and truck makers and safety system suppliers in structures, crash engineering and restraint system development, and have brought this background and expertise to the development of CrashboxxTM.

6) Assist a Driver
Thanks to the Crash Alert feature of CrashboxxTM, and its integration with your Vehicle Tracking System, you can know immediately when one of your vehicles has been in an accident. If you cannot connect with the driver via mobile phone, it is entirely possible the driver has been incapacitated and unable to call for assistance him or herself. A fleet manager can directly call the emergency services, and prepare them ahead of time, not only with accurate location information, but with an estimate of the crash severity and an indication of the potential for driver injury. The right information at the right time, helps your business and your people. That’s the bottom line
